Vättis, the view of the village

Beschreibung

The village seen from the Büel

The village of Vättis was built along the thoroughfare from the entrance to the village (Ausserdorf) via the "Platz", the "Stutz" and the Langgasse in the direction of the Kunkelspass. The area square used to be called "Gass" or "in der Gass". Accordingly, the Gässli can be defined as a side street. Other side streets of the street village Vättis were the Halde, the Wasen and the Winkel. Wasen (on the left in view), today we say "meadows", can be clearly interpreted as a field name.

For a long time, "Adelgöttis" house was the highest house on the Wasen. Adelgott Kressig was the great-grandfather of the current owner of the house. She is the daughter of "Adelgötti Peters Gottfried". This designation of names with the sequence of first names through the generations was commonplace for a long time. Other examples: z'Philaminis Sepp, Sepp is the son of his mother Philomena; z'Ginavevas Peter; z'Battista Seppis Floris Seppli – the great-grandfather's name was Josef, the grandfather Floris, the father Josef. And one last example: z'Fäzi Alberts Fritza Fritz, according to the family tree of Bonifaz.

The field names around Vättis are of German or Rhaeto-Romanic origin. Some are clearly interpretable, like Wasen for meadows. Romansh Gaspus, at the Vättnerberg cable car station, can be translated as "Casa Spusa", "the house of the bride". The Taminabach used to be simply the "Grausbach" in Vättis, for the "big stream", in contrast to the smaller Mühlbach.
