5 tips for the Bernina route:

  • Poschiavo: Charming village with majestic palaces and impressive churches.
  • Alp Grüm: Impressive viewpoint with views towards Cavaglia and the Valposchiavo all the way to Italy.
  • Diavolezza: At Diavolezza, you are in the very heart of the Alpine ballroom.
  • View of the Upper Engadin lake landscape: After the Corvatsch cable car middle station, the view of the Upper Engadin lakes is a constant companion.
  • Glacier mills Maloja: Maloja has the highest concentration of glacier mills in Europe.

The Bernina route offers wonderful views of all the glaciers in the Bernina massif. The route leads from the Mediterranean Poschiavo over the Bernina Pass and the Diavolezza to Pontresina, further up to the Fuorcla Surlej with views of the Biancograt, Piz Bernina and Piz Roseg, and down to Sils with views over the Engadin lake landscape. From Sils along the Via Engadina to Maloja and further over the Muretto Pass to the southern side of the Bernina range on Italian soil and back to the starting point Poschiavo.

The start is in Poschiavo at 1021 meters above sea level and follows the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway to the Bernina Pass at 2328 m, via the glacier garden of Cavaglia with its glacier mills and Alp Grüm with a first view of the eastern side of the Bernina massif. A break on a flat and wide path along Lago Bianco relaxes the muscles for the next 700 vertical meters up to the Diavolezza mountain station, where a fantastic view of the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers awaits.

From the Diavolezza mountain station, you can leisurely descend by gondola or hike past Lej da Diavolezza to the valley station. After crossing the main road, the steep ascent to the Fuorcla Pischa at 2835 m begins. On the descent to Pontresina, you will find catering options at Chamanna Paradies (detour) and the Alp Languard restaurant. After leaving the mountaineering village Pontresina, you enter the lovely Val Roseg at the height of the train station. Before the Hotel Restaurant Val Roseg, the path turns right and climbs to the Fuorcla Surlej with views of Lej da Vadret and the Biancograt of Piz Bernina on the left side. After the Fuorcla Surlej, the wide path leads to the middle station of the Corvatsch cable car. The path then descends steeply for a while and traverses the mountain flank to Alp Prasüra and down to the cultural village Sils. Past the church of Sils Baselgia, the route follows the left valley side on the Via Engiadina, past the Heidi village Grevasalvas to Maloja.

Via Lägh da Cavloc towards the Forno Glacier, you reach the junction to the left towards Muretto Pass at 2559 m, an old connecting path between Switzerland and Italy. A wide path leads down to the Alpe dell’Oro and the Italian village Chiareggio. Over the pastures of Palolungo, Paluetto, and Barchetto, you reach Lago Palù at 1947 m. From there, the path climbs again over Bocchel de Torno and through extensive forests and alpine meadows to the Campascio and Musella Alps. Through the forest, the path leads down to the dam of Lago Campomoro. Over the dam and past the lovely lakes up to Passo Cancian, where you cross the border again. Here begins the long, steep descent via Selva down to Poschiavo.
