53 Bernina route: Stage 5 Surlej-Maloja

Our tip for the next stage of the Bernina route:

• View of the Upper Engadin lake landscape: After the Corvatsch cable car middle station, the view of the Upper Engadin lakes is a constant companion.

• Maloja glacier mills: Maloja has the largest concentration of glacier mills in Europe.

The Corvatsch cable car goes back up from Surlej to the Murtèl middle station, where this stage begins. It goes down shortly but steeply before the hiking trail leads along the slope to Alp Prasüra, always accompanied by a dreamlike view of the blue lakes of Upper Engadin. At Alp Prasüra, the path then leads down into the village of Sils, which is crossed along beautiful Engadin houses. At the San Lurench church in Sils Baselgia, the main road is crossed and then it goes along the Via Engiadina first through a beautiful larch forest and then ascending to the viewpoint at Muotta. The bench comes in handy for a break and to enjoy the view from the Bergell granite mountains over to Muottas Muragl.

A short descent leads to the village of Grevasalvas, where one of the first Heidi films was shot. From there, a driving road leads up to Blaunca, with a view of Piz Lunghin, where the Inn begins, and behind you the view of Lake Sils. At Plan di Zoch, the hiking trail leads down to Maloja, the end point of this scenic long-distance hike.

Detour: Walk from Sils along Lake Sils and continue to Isola and then to Maloja. If you wish, you can also take the boat at the Sils boathouse and comfortably sail to Maloja.
