Between the cantonal road and the highway, south of the village of San Bernardino, lies a true natural jewel: the Suossa raised bog. It is listed in the inventory of raised bogs of national importance and has existed for several thousand years. Proof of this are the seven-meter-thick peat layers. Because to create a layer one meter thick, nature needs about 1000 years.
The area, surrounded by mountain pines and spruces, can be reached on snowshoes or on foot after a short ascent. A beautiful view accompanies us along the entire way. The view plunges like an eagle’s nest down into the Misox. The cars struggling up the many hairpin bends appear like toy figures from here. While admiring the special nature around Suossa, it may happen that you spot an animal searching for food.
In the second part – from Suossa back to the starting point Du Lac – snowshoes are then a must. The trail leads through the forest «Bosch di Valeten», which is marked by its very exciting ups and downs. A free parking lot is conveniently located at the starting point, at the south entrance of the village, near Lago Doss.
