Most of the Cuppellar boulders of Verdabbio occupy an extensive area upstream of the village. There are 14 locations on an area of approx. 3 hectares. These blocks are most likely part of a huge post-glacial landslide. The main erratic boulders are located in an easily accessible area and are surrounded by a forest road. In the area, all the places where boulders are engraved are marked: however, the route must be personally identified by the tourist. Near the boulders, you will find a sign indicating the number that corresponds to the one on the map. Have fun!
But what are cuppellar boulders?
Cupellare boulders are boulders of various shapes and sizes that have incisions on their surface that are usually smooth due to the abrasion of glaciers and are not due to natural causes, but are intentionally man-made.
Cupellar boulders were already known in the Middle Ages and the locations are known to the local population.
They are particularly widespread in the Alps, but not only. They exist all over the world.
