Avers-Juppa - Avers-Juf

From Juppa, the path leads past the two inns «Berghotel turtschi» and «Hotel Bergalga» to the hamlet Podestatenhaus at 2046 m above sea level. In 1664, Augustin Strub, former Podestat in Veltlin, built the «Podestatenhaus» as a retirement home. The destination of the hike is Juf, the highest permanently inhabited settlement in Europe at 2126 m above sea level. The inhabitants of Juf mainly live from agriculture and tourism. Maybe you will spot some chamois, alpine choughs, or even the golden eagle!? There are catering and overnight accommodation options in Juppa and Juf. The return to the starting point is either by PostBus or on foot (on the same route).

The history of the Avers high valley goes far back. Late Stone Age and early medieval finds do not allow conclusions to a permanent settlement yet, but these indicate that the valley was already used very early as a transit area. The Walser settled the Avers in the 13th century. This is still evident today in the settlement pattern (dispersed settlements), the architectural style of the houses, and the Walser dialect.
