Beschreibung
We leave Bad Ragaz railroad station in an easterly direction, cross the Tamina and walk to the Neugüter signpost. Then head south to the Rosenbergli. This is where the ascent to the Porta Romana, the former Roman military and trade route, begins. "Portaser" grapes are grown in the small vineyard area.
Soon our gaze falls on the St. Georg chapel built on rocks in 1430 and the ruins of the former Wartenstein fortress, which was built in 1206 by order of Abbot Konrad von Zwiefalten as a bulwark against the patrons of the monastery.
The monastery was dissolved in 1838 and came into the possession of the Canton of St.Gallen, which now uses the premises as a psychiatric clinic. After crossing the village, we take a look into the Tamina Valley, then follow the Valurweg downhill. A safe path along the upper edge of the Tamina gorge takes us back to Bad Ragaz - directly to the entrance of the Tamina Therme, where we can regenerate our strained legs in the pleasantly warm water.
Geheimtipp
Visit the Schwitter family's farm store in the castle courtyard next to St. George's Chapel.
Sicherheitshinweis
The ascent to Porta Romana can be slippery in places after rain.
Ausrüstung
Normal hiking equipment. Depending on the weather, good footwear (hiking boots) is recommended, otherwise light trekking shoes are also sufficient for the tour.
