Church San Bernardino Mesolcina Calanca
Chiesa San Clemente
Beschreibung
According to tradition, this single-nave sacred building with a coffered ceiling must have been a small copy of the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome. It was restored and enlarged between 1656 and 1666. From 1684 onwards, the Capuchin Fathers, the parish priests of Grono, made significant changes to the church. In the church of St. Clement there are two remarkable testimonies: the high altar in Gothic style and, also in the choir, two stained glass windows from 1561 depicting Saints Roch and Sebastian, patron saints of the Brotherhood, as well as the diocesan saints Lucius and Florinus, Saints Peter and Paul and a pope (St. Clement). In 1700, the flood of the Rià di Mort, which flows down between Castaneda and Calone, caused various damages to the church. On the west and south façades of the church of San Clemente in Grono there are two sundials from the 18th century. The western one shows Italian time, while the southern one shows both local and Italian solar time.
