You are faced with living proof that rocks from prehistoric times determine what lives today: the mosses you see here only grow in wet locations. The water is dammed by serpentinite. This water-impermeable rock was formed during ocean formation 160 million years ago, when these rocks on the seafloor were pulled out of the earth's crust from over 30 km deep.
