You are faced with living proof that rocks from prehistoric times determine what lives today: the mosses you see here only grow in wet locations. The water is dammed by serpentinite. This impermeable rock was formed during ocean formation 160 million years ago, when these rocks were pulled out of the earth's crust from a depth of over 30 km on the seafloor.
