160 million years ago, you would have burned your feet here. Glowing magma rose through the earth's crust and cooled abruptly in contact with the seawater on the ocean floor. Basalt was formed. The glaciers of the Ice Age carved away the relatively soft serpentinite, while the harder basalt resisted and remained in the landscape as a round hump.
