Because the Albula Valley runs in a north-south direction, the sun rarely shines down to the valley floor. Here it is usually colder than on the higher southern slopes. The southern slopes are better suited for agriculture and settlements because of the higher solar radiation. In the Albula Valley, the glaciers have further improved these good conditions by forming terraces and laying the foundation for fertile soils with their deposits. To this day, the villages lie in a privileged location on the relatively flat terraced floors.
