Hotel Rofflaschlucht
Close-up impressions of the Roffla Gorge as you hear the roar of a waterfall and can even make your way beneath the Rhine.

Beschreibung

At the beginning of the 20th century, the American emigrant Christian Pitschen-Melchior returned to his old homeland. He took over the Rofflaschlucht inn from his parents. Inspired by Niagara Falls, Christian and his family set themselves the goal of developing the waterfall in the Roffla Gorge as a tourist attraction and thus ensuring the survival of the family.

So in 1907 he began to carve his way into the gorge. He worked on his endeavour for seven years. A great deal of stamina and strength was required to knock the blast holes in the hard stone. After 8,000 blasts, he had succeeded. The waterfall in the centre of the gorge could be reached via the newly created rock gallery. Then as now, crossing under the roaring Rhine is an impressive experience. At the entrance to the Roffla Gorge there is a historic inn with a restaurant and a small museum documenting the exciting history of its creation.
