Beschreibung
The Tektonikarena Sardona was included in the UNESCO World Heritage because the processes of mountain formation are most clearly visible in this area worldwide. The central element is the Glarus thrust fault, a straight, magical line that can be observed over many kilometers: along this line, old rocks have been pushed over younger ones for over 35 kilometers.
«Wind and weather» have been nibbling at the rocks for millennia: this has created glacial striations, moraines, lakes, gravel and alluvial plains, and rockfall slopes, whose structures are still very well preserved in the largely untouched landscapes. The high density of dry meadows, moorlands, alluvial plains, game reserves, and geotopes of national importance forms a valuable habitat where ibexes, after their extinction in Switzerland in 1911, were reintroduced for the first time. Many settlement traces of the Walser are still visible in the mountain villages.
Stage 1: Filzbach-Murgsee
From the top station of the Filzbach sports lifts (Habergschwänd) to the Talalpsee, six information boards provide information about the geophysical phenomena. The 3-lakes stage then leads past Spaneggsee over the Mürtschenfurggel and Murgseefurggel passes to the Murgsee.
Note(s)
The Sardona World Heritage Trail can also be walked in stages. For those interested in geology, there is an accompanying brochure with geological and natural history information.
Bookable multi-day route:
The Sardona World Heritage Trail can also be booked as a demanding multi-day route including overnight stays and baggage transport (see below).
