At the beginning of the 20th century, the political women's rights movement began in Great Britain. The activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) establishes herself as a pioneer of this movement in 1903 with the founding of the "Woman's Social and Political Union". But the state is reacting more and more brutally to the public protests. The women who take to the streets are largely part of the working class and risk everything in their fight for the right to vote and universal equality for women. However, when the peaceful rebellions have no effect, some supporters of the group, including the determined Maud (Carey Mulligan), finally take more radical paths. In doing so, they not only put their jobs, their family and their home at risk, but also their own lives...
