The Roman connecting path over Parpan - Joch - Runcalier - Passugg

The Roman connecting path from Parpan over the Joch and Runcalier to Passugg is a beautiful hike in the region. Over about 13 kilometers, it passes by alpine farms to the Churer Joch, where there is a wide panoramic view over Chur and the Rhine Valley; in the other direction, the Lenzerheide with its surrounding villages is shown in the best light. On the path over the Oberberg, the remains of the old "town hall" can be seen. Afterwards, the descent leads through varied landscapes down to Passugg. A hike that delights with views from start to finish.

The routes of the Romans and pack animals did not lead through the valley floor but always along the heights. Below in the valley, there were often no passable paths, and floods made the passage additionally unsafe. Churwalden was only settled around the year 1000 – for a long time travelers were therefore forced to take the high routes.

Good, developed paths were deliberately not provided: they did not want to attract foreign armies into the country. The Romans therefore crossed the higher mountain ridges and thus reached the Churer Joch.

Traces of Roman paths were also found in the area of the Schwarzen Wald, as well as on the Via Strata to Tschiertschen.
