"The Magic Mountain" still attracts numerous culture enthusiasts to Davos today, who set out to trace the locations of the novel by Thomas Mann. They can be inspired by the Thomas Mann Path, which leads from the Waldhotel Davos (former forest sanatorium) at 1600 m above sea level to the Schatzalp at 1880 m above sea level.
Along the 2.8 km long path there are ten panels that serve as "literary stations" showing the references of Thomas Mann's work to Davos. The path leads, among other places, to the "favorite place of Hans Castorp", the hero of the novel, and ends at the Thomas Mann Square on the Schatzalp, which has been created behind the botanical garden Alpinum Schatzalp.
Thomas Mann (1875–1955) came to Davos from May 12 to June 15, 1912 to visit his wife Katia, who was undergoing treatment at the forest sanatorium. During this period he took numerous walks in the area above the forest sanatorium, an area through which the Thomas Mann Path runs. He processed his impressions of Davos in the novel "The Magic Mountain," published in 1924.
