Beschreibung

The Via GeoAlpina is a joint project of the Alpine countries, launched as part of the International Year of Planet Earth 2007. The project aims to bring the geological, geomorphological or hydrological highlights along the various ViaAlpina routes from Trieste to Monaco closer to the public.

Two stages of the Via GeoAlpina run right through the Sardona World Heritage Site.

The first leads from Weisstannen to Elm. On this stage, you can observe a geological phenomenon of world class: the Glarus thrust fault. This shapes the landscape along the route and is clearly visible on the mountain slopes.

By train to Sargans, then bus towards Pizolpark, on weekdays change bus at Pizolpark – on Sundays the bus runs directly from Sargans station to Weisstannen / Vorsiez

From Zurich on the A3 to Mels, leave the motorway at the Mels / Sargans exit, the way into the Weisstannen valley is signposted from the motorway exit. Last possible parking places in Weisstannen

Wasserfälle Walabütz

The Walabütz waterfalls in Weisstannen offer impressive natural spectacles. The Isengrindfall, at 230 meters, is one of the highest waterfalls in Europe. The Mattbach waterfalls, at 75 and 65 meters, are also worth seeing.

Mountain Restaurant Heidiland

Alp Walabütz

On the Alp Walabütz in the municipality of Mels, over 180 animals live. Two shepherds take care of the animals. Visitors can enjoy an impressive view of the mountain panorama, while the waterfalls of Finzenwand, Mattbach, and Insengrind offer a harmonious melody.
