The gravel bike route starts in Flims, from there the route leads through the Flims forest down to Trin Mulin, where you can catch a glimpse of the impressive Rhine Gorge along the way. On the stretch from Trin village down to Tamins, you follow the canton road before continuing along quiet gravel paths along the Rhine. Soon you enter the Bündner Herrschaft, a region known for its winegrowing and charming small towns. For sporty riders, a short detour to Jenins and Maienfeld offers the chance to experience the region's Mediterranean flair. With Bad Ragaz, the turnaround point of the route is reached after just under 50 km, providing the perfect opportunity for a small lunch break before the upcoming pass crossing. The ascent initially begins on the old Valenser Landstrasse, which is now little used and rewards the effort with a unique view of the Tamina Bridge and Pfäfers. A short detour to the Pfäfers Monastery is worth it for culture enthusiasts.
The route continues on the road to Valens until the bike signage turns off onto the gravel path along the Mapraggsee. The wide gravel path briefly changes to an easy trail at the end of the lake before crossing the river via a bridge and returning to the road to Vättis.
The lightly trafficked road ascends gently, comfortably covering the altitude to the village. Here the high valley begins, where only sporadic cars are encountered. Surrounded by the mountains of Graubünden, the route continues up to the pass height, passing the toll station before reaching first the Eggwald guesthouse and shortly before the pass summit the mountain guesthouse. From the mountain guesthouse, the pass road climbs again and presents another challenge up to the tunnel at 1406 meters. Once at the top, the breathtaking view from the Rufichopf viewpoint over the surrounding mountains and valleys rewards the efforts.
The descent from the Kunkelpass is not entirely without danger; watch out for possible unevenness and be cautious to maintain control of your bike.
Upon reaching Tamins, proceed a short distance on the heavily trafficked canton road, which has a bike lane up to just before Trin. We recommend using lights and avoiding riding with children here. Alternatively, this section can be covered by post bus.
From Trin, the route goes through the Flims forest up to Flims, where after the strenuous route you can relax with a refreshing swim in the Crestasee and enjoy the sun. The route ends finally in Flims, where you can wind down the gravel bike tour in one of the cozy restaurants or cafés and recover from the efforts of the tour.
Geheimtipp
For the section Tamin - Trin briefly switch to the post bus to avoid the heavily trafficked road.
