Beschreibung

This challenging and culturally rich long-distance hike covers about 80 kilometers through the fascinating mountain world between the Hinterrhein, the Avers Alps and the Bergell to the southern Alpine foothills.

The starting point is Thusis – from there you hike through the mystical Viamala Gorge into Val Schons to Andeer. After a stopover with a thermal bath or culture, continue through the wild romantic Roffla Gorge into the Ferrera Valley. On the old Avers road, you follow the Walser path upstream past impressive rock formations, historic bridges, and traditional hamlet structures to Juppa.

Over high pastures, historic alpine paths and mountain villages, you descend to Soglio – the "most beautiful balcony of the Alps" with breathtaking views of the panorama of the Bergell granite giants.

On the Italian side, you can expect a varied continuation: chestnut forests, cultural trails, old mule tracks, quiet hamlets, and alpine passes lead you to the famous Acquafraggia waterfalls, further through the Piuro valley to the impressive Palazzo Vertemate and finally on a comfortable river path to the historic town of Chiavenna, the cultural endpoint of the route.

Historic route with a view

This route follows the old trade and alpine paths of the Walsers, Rhaetians, and Romans – across a diverse language, culture, and landscape border. The combination of archaic nature, lived Walser tradition, medieval architecture, and Alpine-Italian joie de vivre makes this route an unforgettable hiking experience.

Book now – Hike individually from place to place, optionally with luggage transport and overnight stays in selected accommodations. Individual stages can be combined with PostBus or public transport.

Geheimtipp

  • Viamala Gorge: Carved into the massive rock by glacier ice and the waters of the Hinterrhein thousands of years ago, living traces of a fascinating history can still be discovered today in the Viamala Gorge.

  • Painted Ceiling of St. Martin's Church in Zillis: The Romanesque painted ceiling is world-famous. It has made St. Martin's Church the "Sistine Chapel of the Alps."

  • Roffla Gorge: A gorge of the Hinterrhein between Andeer-Bärenburg and Sufers.

  • Palazzo Vertemate Franchi (near Prosto): Renaissance palace with gardens, frescoes and furniture – worth seeing!
