The tour takes you into what feels like the untouched wilderness of Canada and the Grand Canyon, only to be greeted again shortly afterwards by the seemingly endless forest directly on the Rhine. One of the region's gravel highlights can be ridden as a day trip with plenty of elevation gain or as a challenging training ride. March 5, 2025 closed until further notice between Sculms Innerhof and Egschi due to rockfall and landslide. No bypass option.

Beschreibung

From Ilanz, the route initially heads east along the main road with little traffic. Versam is the first intermediate destination, as from there the route leads into the Safiental valley. A gentle but steady climb takes you to the highest point of our tour at the turn-off to Tenna.

High above the Rabiusa, you ride back out of the valley, partly in the rocks. The impressive views and the tranquillity of nature are impressive. Before the Versamer Tobel, a challenging but rideable, serpentine single trail awaits you.

At Trin railroad station - in the middle of the famous Rhine Gorge - you reach the lowest point of the tour. From there, you have to master the second ascent. However, this is crowned with a magnificent panoramic view from the “il Spir” viewing platform. Everything that follows is dessert: the view of the famous Lake Cauma, the rollercoaster-like descent to Bargaus and the original village of Sagogn. They accompany you on the way back to the starting point in Ilanz.

Geheimtipp

In the 1.7 km long Aclatobel tunnel in the Safiental valley, there is a narrow sidewalk to ride on. However, a functioning rear light ensures additional safety.

The tour is not suitable for beginners, as it leads along exposed paths and short trail sections in the Versamer Tobel. A safe riding style is essential.

The “il Spir” viewing platform is a must for excursions in the Surselva vacation region. Nowhere else can you enjoy such an impressive view over the Ruinaulta (Rhine Gorge).

Sicherheitshinweis

In the area of the rock tunnels, there is a short section with an exposed single trail.  You should definitely walk a few meters here. It is not absolutely necessary to be free of shrinkage.

The tour should not be undertaken in uncertain weather conditions. Weather changes are frequent in the mountains. If a rain front or similar is approaching during the hike, you should turn back in good time.
