The Maloja mountain cemetery and Giovanni Segantini's grave

In September 1899, Giovanni Segantini climbed the Schafberg above Pontresina to finish the Sein painting. There he fell ill with peritonitis. A doctor from St. Moritz, Dr. Oskar Bernhard, was called to his aid, but unfortunately he could do nothing more for the patient. Giovanni Segantini died on September 28 at the age of 41. He was buried in the small cemetery of Maloja on October 1, 1899. Giovanni Segantini had chosen the cemetery of Maloja as the subject for his painting Glaubenstrost in 1896.

A plaque on the tomb of the Segantini family bears the inscription Da presso e da lunge in terra e in cielo uniti in vita e in morte ora e sempre (Near and far, on earth and in heaven, united in life and in death, now and always). On the tombs of Giovanni Segantini and his companion Bice Bugatti is the inscription Arte ed amore vincono il tempo (Art and love conquer time ). Next to Bice and Giovanni are the tombs of their sons Mario, Gottardo and Alberto Segantini. His daughter Bianca was buried in Arco, Giovanni Segantini's birthplace.
