The chapel of San Lucio, considered one of the most important buildings in Moesano, dominates today's cantonal road in an impressive way.

Beschreibung

The Rotunda and the Chapel of S. Lucius date from the VIII to the IX centuries and, together with the Church of S. Carpoforo in Mesocco, are the oldest ecclesiastical building in Mesolcina. The chapel consists of two clearly separated parts: one, round, dates from the time of Charlemagne, between the end of the VIII and the beginning of the IX century; the other, square, probably dates from the XIV period. The original cylindrical structure made of stone with well-preserved plaster stands on a rock, which is also visible in the newer structure. The structure is surmounted by a conical poplar roof and a small bell pediment with a bell dating back to the XIII century. The inner diameter of 3.10 m suggests that the building was not used for church services; there are also no traces of an altar or baptismal font. In 1980-90 the building was completely restored. The frescoes on the sides of the entrance door were also brought back to light.
