Beschreibung

The Pizol region is known for its breathtaking views over the mountains of Graubünden and Glarus and the St. Gallen Rhine Valley as far as Lake Constance. Nowhere else can you enjoy the view as undisturbed as on the highest peaks of the skiing and hiking area. In the summit quartet, we climb the Garmil, the Gamidauerspitz, the Hochwart and the Pizol. The highest peak at 2,844 m a.s.l. M. and the namesake of the area, the Pizol summit is the highlight of the tour. Along the way, you will also be enchanted by crystal-blue mountain lakes, seemingly otherworldly scree landscapes, romantic Alps and, with a bit of luck, even chamois, ibex or eagles.

The route can be hiked as a whole in one piece, each stage individually or in any combination.

Geheimtipp

The Berghotel Gaffia is the ideal overnight accommodation and starting point for this tour, also in other combination variants.

Sicherheitshinweis

The route to the Pizol summit is an alpine route and is marked blue and white. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required.

Herd protection dogs are expected to be in use on the Gaffara Alp during the first two weeks of August. The dogs will be kept on a lead in the morning and only allowed back to the sheep in the evening. This means that there is no risk to hikers during the day. If anyone is in the vicinity of the alp early in the morning, late in the evening or at night, caution is advised (e.g. when bivouacking).

Ausrüstung

Day hiking rucksack (approx. 20 liters) with rain cover, sturdy and comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate and hard-wearing clothing in multiple layers, telescopic poles if necessary, sun and rain protection, provisions and drinking water, first aid kit, pocket knife, cell phone, maps

Wegbeschreibung

We start the tour at the Pizolhütte. From the station, we head uphill to the right onto the hiking trail in the direction of Wildseeluggen. After a relatively flat start, past the Twärchamm climbing garden, we soon reach the zigzag ascent. Once we reach the Wildseeluggen, we are treated to a breathtaking view of the Wildsee and our first two destinations - the Pizol summit behind the remains of the glacier of the same name and the Hochwart to the right. Here we branch off onto the less frequented hiking trail to the left along the Wildsee. We continue over the moraines of the former glacier in the direction of the Pizolsattel. For safety reasons, the ascent to this was moved from the Pizol glacier into the rock. Steel cables have been used as handrails at exposed points. Once at the saddle, we continue to the right along the ridge until we reach the Pizol summit from behind. We have reached our first goal.

To get to the Hochwart, we take the same route almost all the way back to the Wildsee. Shortly before the lake, a path branches off to the left towards Weisstannen, which we follow and soon arrive at the Lavtina saddle after a short and rocky ascent. Now follow the last few meters of altitude along the path on the right-hand side until you reach Hochwart after about 10-15 minutes.

We continue on the third stage towards Gamidauerspitz, the next destination of the tour. We take the same route, via Lavtinasattel and past the Wildsee lake, back to Wildseeluggen. Here we branch off to the left and circle the Wildsee on the other side. We are now on the path of the famous 5-lake hike. We follow this down to the Schottensee, over the next longer ascent, past the Schwarzsee and to the small high plateau with the Steinmannli. On the descent after the Steinmannli, we reach a signpost on the Baseggla. The 5-lake hike turns right here towards Baschalvasee. However, we take the path straight ahead towards Gamidauerspitz, which we can already see in front of us.

From the Gamidauerspitz we continue towards the valley. After a descent, we hike via Bastanggla to the last summit, the Garmil. At the Basürla signpost, we follow the path in the direction of "Fürggli via Garmil". Once on the Garmil, however, we do not continue in the direction of Fürggli, but take the same route back to the Basürla junction. There we follow the signpost to Gaffia Station, which we reach after just under an hour.
