Research by the wayside: On the way to snow research

Ascent in the Parsenn area, past the Weissfluhjoch experimental field to the former institute building.
Details
Beschreibung
The path passes several scientific measuring stations, because science is not limited to laboratories. On the contrary, work outdoors is an essential part of environmental research. Around Davos, scientists from the SLF operate numerous facilities and experimental areas. Some are new, some nearly a hundred years old. Together, they provide important insights about snow and avalanches, forests and meadows, biodiversity, and climate change.
Geheimtipp
Those who haven't had enough after the ascent follow the signposts to Totalp and circle around the Totalpsee. On the northeast of the lake, slightly below on the slope, researchers from SLF have installed photovoltaic modules to investigate how snow affects the output of solar power plants in high mountain areas – result: very positive!
When ascending with the Parsenn cable car to the middle station, the walking time is reduced to about an hour, and the return trip is also possible by cable car.
Ausrüstung
The hike leads into the mountains. Appropriate equipment including sturdy footwear is required.
Wegbeschreibung
In front of the valley station, turn right and walk left past the church of St. Theodul into Dorfstrasse. After a few meters, turn left into Salzgäbastrasse. At the T-junction, turn right, continue to the youth hostel, and then turn right again onto Börtjistrasse. We follow the path uphill and signs towards Büschalp, Parsenn hut, and Panoramaweg, eventually reaching a forest path. From there, continually uphill towards Panoramaweg and Parsenn hut until we reach the tracks of the Parsenn cable car above the middle station. We keep to the left of the tracks and only pass underneath them at the height of Parsenn lake. After about 100 meters elevation gain, we reach the Weissfluhjoch experimental field. Here, researchers collect daily snow data in winter. But even in summer, scientists measure data here, for example, the amount of precipitation.
We continue along the path to the mountain station of the Parsenn cable car. There is the former institute building. However, it no longer belongs to the institute and is not publicly accessible.
The return is along the ascent path or by the Parsenn cable car.

Anreise Information
Coming from Landquart, park directly behind the gallery at Lake Davos and walk or take the bus the short distance to the starting point.
Coming from Flüelapass, turn right at the railway tracks to the parking lot at Lake Davos and walk or take the bus the short distance to the starting point.
Coming from the south, drive through the town and head for one of the mentioned parking options.
Parken
Parking options directly at the starting point are hardly available. It is therefore more sensible to head for one of the large, paid parking lots nearby, for example at Lake Davos or the Bünda parking lot.
