On historical paths through the Safiental
On old church, valley and high-altitude paths, you will discover one of the most original mountain regions of Graubünden. The hike leads along a babbling brook, through idyllic hamlets and villages, shady forests, and over blooming alpine meadows.
Along the way, you encounter the typical Safier settlement landscape with its residential houses, stables, hay barns, and alpine huts – a living testimony of Walser culture. The characteristic dispersed settlements shape the region’s image and give it a very special charm.
In the south, east, and west, the Safiental is framed by imposing mountain ranges. The historic mountain passes, which once represented important connections, are still only accessible on foot. Only with the construction of the road at the end of the 19th century did the valley open towards the north.
Here you can access the individual stages:
Geheimtipp
5 Tips on the Walserweg Safiental
Islabord viewpoint near Versam: spectacular view into the unique Rhine Gorge with its rock walls up to 300 m high.
Tenna Church: the beautifully restored frescoes from the late Middle Ages depict the Passion cycle and are of national importance. It is also worth taking a look at the beautifully decorated wooden ceiling.
Spensa - self-service shop: the Spensa – Safier word for pantry from pre-refrigerator times – is always well stocked with products from the Safiental.
Camaner huts: the alpine buildings – hut, stupli and stable – are lined up like on a string at an altitude of about 2,000 m above sea level and are witnesses to the formerly prevalent agriculture. Each family had their own individual dairy in the huts, where cheese and butter were produced.
Exhibition stable Safier Ställe: the exhibition stable in Turra (near the post bus stop) impressively shows the significance of the Safier Ställe for the cultural landscape as well as their construction and use.
Sicherheitshinweis
Please note that from October 13 to November 14, 2025, the hiking trail between Versam and Sommergada is closed due to forestry work. There is a detour via Fatscha/Arezen. The hiking time is slightly shorter.
